Launching a boat for the first time feels like a test with an audience. It is not. Almost every problem new boaters hit comes down to a few simple things. Handle these and you will look like you have done it a hundred times.
Mistake 1: prepping on the ramp
Do all your loading and strapping in the staging area, not on the ramp. Pull up ready to float.
Mistake 2: forgetting the drain plug
Put it in first, before anything else. Run a pre-launch checklist until it is a habit.
Mistake 3: backing too fast

Mistake 4: no plan for the truck
Know who parks the truck and where before you get to the water, so the boat is not tied to the courtesy dock forever while you sort it out.
Pick a quiet ramp with room to spare for your first few runs. Find boat ramps by state and start where the crowd is thin.
