Backing a boat trailer down the ramp is the part that makes new boaters sweat. The trailer turns the opposite way you expect, people are watching, and the water is right there. Here is how to back a boat trailer straight, every time.
Line it up before you back
Pull past the ramp, then bring the truck and trailer into a straight line before you start backing. Roll the windows down and turn the radio off. You want to hear your spotter and think clearly. A straight start is half the job.
One hand at the bottom of the wheel
Put one hand at the bottom of the steering wheel. Now move your hand the same way you want the trailer to go. Trailer drifting right? Move your hand right. Keep the moves small — a little steering makes a big swing at the trailer.
Go slow and use your mirrors
Idle speed only. Watch the trailer in your side mirrors, not out the back window. When the trailer fills up more of one mirror, steer toward that mirror to bring it back straight.
Jackknifed? Pull forward and reset
If the trailer folds toward the truck, do not fight it. Pull all the way forward, straighten out, and start over. Nobody backs a trailer well by forcing a bad angle.
The real trick is practice. Find a quiet launch with a big lot and light traffic and run it a few times on a slow morning. Pick your state and look for a ramp with trailer parking to spare.
