Late summer and fall pull the water down on a lot of reservoirs. The ramp that was perfect in June now ends in mud, and the last thing you want is a trailer wheel off the end of the concrete.
Read the water before you back
Walk the ramp first. Look for where the concrete ends and where the mud starts. If you cannot see the end of the ramp, wade it or watch another boater launch before you commit your truck.
Find the deeper ramps
On big reservoirs, some ramps are built longer for low water. When the lake drops, those are the ones that still reach. If your usual launch is high and dry, check nearby ramps on the same water — browse by state and look at the launches around the same lake.
Back a little deeper, float a little sooner
In low water you often need to back deeper than normal to float the boat off. Go slow, keep the truck tires on concrete, and have a spotter watch your rear wheels. Power-load gently so you do not dig a hole at the end of the ramp.
Low water changes fast with the season. Check the launch and the water level before every trip in the fall.
